Melisa's Teaching Experience

For part of my student teaching, I worked in an inner city school in London, England with first and second graders. The year I graduated from college in March, I started subbing.  That spring I was a long term sub for the 7th, 8th and 9th grade math teacher in Isle.  I also subbed for the next year in Isle, Onamia and Ogilvie while coaching Jr. High volleyball, basketball and softball in Isle.
My first full time job was in Koyuk, Alaska.  Koyuk is an small Eskimo village 150 miles east of Nome and 90 mile south of the Arctic Circle. There were only 250 people in the village. I taught thirty 3, 4, & 5 year olds for three years.  I was also the high school Volleyball coach for our 5 person co-ed team. (Only five players, the pilot and I would fit on the single engine planes used for the away games.)
I returned to the Mille Lacs area in 1994 and started working in Onamia at the Elementary school.  I worked there for 21 years. For the first 7 years I taught in 3rd, 6th and Kindergarten while coaching Volleyball and Basketball.  After I completed my Master's of Arts in Education, I worked as the Title I lead teacher and coordinator for 14 years. During this time, I worked with students in every grade Kindergarten through twelfth grade helping them with reading and math. During that time, I went back to school for my reading teacher certification to obtain the skills needed to help students with reading trouble.
After working in education for twenty years, I decided to go into administration. I want to help teachers and students to be successful. Once again I went back to school, this time to get my K-12 Principals license. In the summer of 2015, I was transferred to Mille Lacs Academy and taught Reading and English to seventh through twelfth graders. During the last 6 months I worked in the Onamia school district, I was also the Principal designee for Mille Lacs Academy.
I am looking forward to this new adventure at my alma mater.
